Turkey's First Train Set Out in Baku-Tbilisi-Kars Railway Line

The first Turkish train to operate on the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway line, which is called Iron Silk Road, moved from Mersin. The train that comes to the side has 16 vagons. 650 tons of soya sauce and ceramic adhesive are contained in 32 conteiners. The trade with Azerbaijan and Turkey would be further strengthen by this line. The length of the railway line is 2100 kilometers. The journey takes about 96 hours between Mersin and Baku.

With this train reaching the destination in 4 days, the commercial ties between the two countries will be further strengthened. The fact that the train capacity is higher than other ways of transportation also increases the import and export potential between the two countries. The departure station of this train which reached Baku at the end of 4 days was Yenice Station of Mersin.

The construction of the railway line began on November 21, 2007. The opening of the line took place on October 30, 2017. The construction takes 10 years in total. This rail line is connecting Central Asia through the Caspian to Turkey. From the commercial point of view, the Iron Silk Road name was given to the project, which had an important place in history.

The opening ceremony took place in Baku with the participation of President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The train that made the first trip on the railway, was moved from Kazakhstan. The train had 15 vagons and carried 900 tons of cereal with 30 containers in it. The train, which managed to move very quickly, reached a total of 40 hours in Kars, the destination stop. This time was less than the estimated 10 hours. The kilometer the train took was 4,695 kilometers. The fact that it took such a long distance in a very short time proved how successful the project was and increased hopes.
